Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) or foam rolling is a type of soft tissue therapy that focuses on the nerves and connectives. Myofascial restrictions can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain-sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)tissues. Our body is a kinetic chain, which works as an integrated functional unit. Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.
Myofascial describes a symptom or treatment that relates to the connective tissue of the muscles — the fasciae — and the muscles themselves. Practitioners treat myofascial pain using myofascial release, physical manipulation aimed at relaxing the muscles and fasciae. Many events can cause myofascial pain, including physical strain, surgery, and inflammatory conditions that tighten the muscles. Often, people feel the pain from these knot-like constrictions at a different point in the body than the specific problem area. The release of these origins or “trigger points” can alleviate pain.
Active Engagement (AE) techniques are used to increase the intensity of treatment without increasing the pressure. They integrate active movement by the client with therapeutic techniques by the therapist. In addition, these techniques address multiple issues: chronic tension, overuse injuries, and muscles that are difficult to access. The work is performed during concentric and eccentric muscular contractions. Concentric contraction is the shortening of a muscle. In contrast, an eccentric contraction is the lengthening of a muscle.
